It is delightful to see our vegetable garden is looking great this year.  As you know, we haven't been getting any luck with our garden in the last three years.  So this year's harvest is pretty much a delight.  

This is the only eggplant I have this year, and it is doing fantastic.  The bell peppers, jalapeños, and the banana pepper are looking great as well.  We shared some peppers to the neighbors last night.  I used the remaining ones for my stir-fry. :)

We also tried planting some tomato varieties this year.  I will tell you more about it in my next post.

My First-Time Vegetable Container Gardening

We thought of having a vegetable garden in the backyard again this year after two years of stopping it due to heavy nut grass problem.  My dear husband had treated the soil and left it untouched for two years.  Surely no nut grass came back within those times.  So this Spring we bought some starter plants of tomatoes and eggplants. I planted okra seeds and long beans seeds, too. Unfortunately, none of the starter tomatoes were growing.  Instead, they were drying up.  The okra seeds germinated but they just stopped growing. Only the long beans are currently improving their growth.  The eggplants are not doing good either.  It's very frustrating and disappointing. 

I decided to try vegetable container gardening so I bought a potted tomato plant as a start.  I found this one at Walmart and, so far, it is doing great.  It is now bearing fruits.  But only one has grown and ripened so fast that I had to pick it before the spoiled birds devour it.  This is very good in salads and soups.  There are four little fruits now so hopefully they will grow and ripen at the same time soon.

If you haven't tried vegetable container gardening, now is the time to do so. I am also a beginner like you and I want to learn more.

Huge Black And Yellow Spider In The Garden

Huge black and yellow spider.

 Looked like this huge black and yellow spider was very upset when his web got ruined while I was watering my vegetable garden early this evening.  I didn't see him until I walked around to the other side to remove the dead leaves from the okras.  He was so big and freaking scary!

My husband said it's one of those garden spiders.  Some grow really big and some don't.  Boy, you will see different kinds of insects and arachnid in the yard especially when you are growing vegetables.

The Garden Is Looking Good But We Have A Problem

Here's the latest picture of our vegetable garden.  The tomatoes are bearing and there's plenty of them.  The okras at the back are looking great.  They are ready to give us some harvest soon because I saw a few little ones in there.  

The problem we have now is that some of the red tomatoes have holes in them.  Looks like they're pecked or something.  My husband and I were seeing a bird landing on the sticks that he was trying to scout where the ripe tomato is.  So I asked my dear husband to buy a plastic owl from the garden center.  I got the idea from my girl friend because she has one.  I hope this is gonna be effective.

But something is also bothering us.  Grasshoppers are around again!  I spoke with my neighbor and mentioned to her about the holes in the tomatoes.  She said grasshoppers also do that pecking thing.  Oh no!  We have to do something about it quick.

Anyway, here are some tomatoes and jalapenos I picked this evening.  We have so many jalapenos, too.  We gave some to our neighbor across the street.  It's always nice to share.

Catching Up

My darling daughter and I went to see my friend and her daughters today.  DD kept asking when shall we go visit JJ and H.  She missed them a lot.  Well, today my friend wasn't very busy so we were able to visit them and had a great time catching up.

After a very nice lunch, my friend took me to her humble vegetable garden.  She harvested some tomatoes, long beans, bitter melon, and green leafy vegetables for me to take home.  What a sweet person.  Besides her humble attitude, I admire her for being such a good gardener.  She grows veggies very well.

DD and I went home happy and belly full.  :)  This weekend, I will try to plant some alugbati (vine spinach) in our vegetable garden.  I still have a small space that I need to fill in with other veggies.  Alugbati is a very nutritious vegetable.  Me and my family back home loves to put it in vegetable soup.

Starting Our Vegetable Garden For 2014

Just bought few tomato plants yesterday from a hardware store nearby.  They're selling $2.50 per box that contains 4 tomato plants.  I bought three boxes of different varieties.

We are starting our vegetable garden again.  For this year, we will be having tomatoes (mostly as usual), eggplant, okras, and bok choy.  We will also try to grow sweet potatoes for sweet potato tops and string beans.  Hopefully the string beans will give me lots of harvested beans this year.

My dear husband already planted the tomatoes this evening when he got home from work.  This weekend we'll buy the other vegetables seeds we can plant them as sooner.

Weekend Snapshot: Presenting Our Vegetable Garden 2013

This is what our the garden looks now.  The tomatoes are growing so fast.  The long beans are climbing aggressively up the trellis.  And oh, I also have a couple of bitter melon vines at the far end of the trellis.  The okras are looking good, too.  I cannot wait to see the bok choy sprout so I can harvest them soon for my pork and mixed veggies soup.

In the photo, my little one and I just finished picking ripe cherry tomatoes.  She likes them.  And they're good in garden salads as well.

Wordless Wednesday: My Garden Tomatoes, Ready To Share With The Neighbors

First Harvest From The Vegetable Garden 2012

My husband watered the vegetable garden this morning.  He told me, on the phone, that my green peppers got some big ones already.  When he came home from work we walked down to the garden together and I was surprised that our vegetables are bearing.  Here's my first harvest, a few green peppers.  They are good for soup and do-it-yourself sauce.

My husband is happy to see that the tomatoes are out too.  Though it will take a long time for them to turn red, we cannot wait to harvest them also.  The string beans are growing more than two inches every day since he placed those bamboo poles.  Seems like they are waiting for something to wrap their vines with before clinging to the trellis. 

The garden is scheduled for a plant food again in a couple of weeks.  So they will be very happy getting their food again.

Happy Plants

It's going to be a very hot summer like the past few years.  Hopefully the drought is not as bad as last year's.  But I can already see cracks on the ground in the yard.  We are worried about the foundation of the house because it will have a big gap again.  We have to soak the foundation few times so the ground will maintain it's moisture.

Two nights ago we had a good rain because of the storm.  The garden looked really good and the tomatoes are bearing fruits now.  The string beans reached the first bar of the trellis.  Few herbs that we planted (from Hometownseeds.com) have already sprouted.  All in all, the plants look very happy.  My husband said it will be by July before we can harvest some tomatoes, eggplant, okra, string beans, peppers, and cucumbers.  Feeding the plants with plant food once every two or three weeks helps them grow big and healthy.

Well, here's our vegetable garden.  We have cucumbers, tomatoes, string beans, peppers, and okras.  My husband built a garden trellis for the string beans to climb on.  I thought it's neat that he stained the trellis.  My husband really likes gardening.  Although he complains a lot sometimes when he gets scrapes on the skin or blisters, he loves tending a garden.
