Maintenance Checks Routine For A Safer Home

When I was drying clothes few weeks ago, some of them did not dry well.  The dryer was taking too long to dry clothes.  My honey check both washer and dryer.  He said a total cleaning has to be done on the dryer.  Now, it is working fine.

Did you experience the same problem with your appliance?  Well here is  what you should do to keep your dryer functioning well.  In this very hot summer time, catching fire in the home is possible.  You probably peel the lint out of your clothes dryer's lint trap after every load of laundry.  But that is not enough to keep the appliance from posing a fire hazard to your home.  Below are few more maintenance checks to your laundry-day routine

• Notice how long it takes the dryer to dry your clothes.  If they are still damp at the end of a typical drying cycle, or it it is starting to take longer to dry clothes, your lint screen or exhaust duct maybe blocked.
• Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct at least once a year.  The duct is the coil that sends the hot dryer air to the outdoors.  The vent is the hole where the hot air leaves the house.  Both can get clogged  with lint and overheat, send dirty, moist air back into your home, or even catch on fire.  You might have to disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer and vent to remove the blockage.
• Clean the back of the dryer and sweep behind and underneath it regularly to remove accumulated lint.
• If your exhaust duct is plastic or foil, replace it with a rigid or corrugated, semirigid metal duct.  Plastic and foil are too flexible and trap lint easily.
• Avoid throwing gasoline-,oil- or chemical-soiled clothes and towels into the dryer.  Instead, wash them several times and line-dry them.  If you have to use the dryer for them, choose the lowest setting and remove them the minute the cycle is finished.  Even washed-and-dried clothes that have come into contact with volatile chemicals can ignite.  Best bet:  Consider the clothes ruined and safely dispose of them.

Winter Snow Storm

It's winter storm in North Texas. The snow started falling down at midnight last night. The forecast says it will be cold until next week. Ah, winter weather.

I wish I can play in the snow but nah...maybe next time. We had about six inches of snow today. The road is sleek and scary to drive on. My honey went to work but came back home from halfway to his office because of the slippery road. We saw a couple of cars went into the ditch at the intersection close to our house. I am thankful he came home safe.

I hope you all have a safe weekend. Don't go out if not necessary. Enjoy the company of the family in this cool winter weather.

A Weekend At The Library

The library is one of the best places on earth. There's no place that will allow you to read the newspapers from different states and magazines that cover such a broad field of topics. It's a super resource center that puts a world of knowledge right at your fingertips.

There's no way to express my full admiration for the people that originally invented this concept. It's the best place on earth for indulging in the world of the written word. I have always loved books, and I love to write. The library gives me an opportunity to read and a quiet space to write. It's the best of both worlds.

I go on Saturdays because I know that there are few people that will wake up and think of going to the library on the weekend. It's always busy during the weekdays. The weekend is different. People are at home watching games or out shopping on Saturday. No one is checking out library books but me. I usually leave home and set my home security alarm. I get some brunch from the local eatery and go directly to the library.

It feels just like home when I'm there, and I always want to hang around for longer than I attended to. I check all the different books and try to decide what I will check out.

Summer Pool Safety for Kids

Whether you are going to a friends' pool, the local public pool or in your own backyard, summer safety around swimming pools is a must. A few tips to keep in mind while your kids are around the water can keep them safe all summer long.

Never allow children to swim alone or without adult supervision. Taking your eyes off them for just a minute is enough time for a child to drown.

Water floats are toys and are not a safe alternative to personal flotation devices such as water safety vests. If a child cannot swim be sure to keep them in a shallow pool with supervision.

Beware Of Those Harmful Bites

When on a vacation and doing outdoor activities, safety is the first concern. And when traveling far, we do not want to be in harm. You see there are many harmful elements around us. If we do not take extra precautions, we might get sick. Example of these are mosquito bites. Summer is very hot. And during this hot season, mosquitoes come out and do not hesitate biting.

One of my friends back home had "dengue" ( sickness caused by a mosquito bite). She was bit by a mosquito when we had our school camping in high school. Luckily, she was treated immediately and survived. Now, the schools back home require mosquito traps everywhere. School officials and parents ensure students health and safety at all times.

On vacation, camping or outdoor happenings, our safety should always be the first priority. Beware of mosquitoes. Do not let them touch you. Trap them.
