Had our roof replaced recently. Mulches Help Keep The Moisture In The Soil

Months after my husband pulled out the old bushes by the front porch, finally, we planted new bushes.  It's long overdue, I know.  But here it is.  My dear husband and I did a lot of yard work today.  I don't usually brag about accomplishments and stuff but it's a productive Sunday for us here in the Sefcik household.  I am just super happy that we were able to get our gardening going again this year including the front porch's flower beds.  New bushes in the row that will take years to grow into hedges.  But that's alright. The house is now happy that we came to our senses to beautify our home again.  

We bought the new bushes from Home Depot using the Visa gift card my dear husband claimed from the rewards he got from buying paints a month ago - also from Home Depot.  We bought a few Boxwood Holly and a Sky Pencil Japanese Holly to replace the Wax Myrtle that's previously planted in the corner where the water hose is.  Then we topped the flowerbeds with red mulch that according to my hubby will keep the moisture in the soil so the plants won't dry out in the summer heat.

I know it's quite silly but I had to pick the red mulch so it matches the red bricks of the house.  Target for this project is to complete the planting of flowering plants before the fourth of July comes.  It would be nice to have a newly planted flower beds when the holiday comes.

When he got home one evening, my husband noticed water on the kitchen floor by the sink.  He called and asked me about it.  I told him it wasn't there when we left. Four Fans Are On

It is so darn hot in my house right now!!!  Four fans are actually on and working in their maximum capacity to help us cool down.  Two ceiling fans and two floor fans.

There is something wrong with our air-conditioning unit.  It was working and cooling fine until yesterday afternoon.  When my dear husband checked everything, he figured out that the fan blades of the outdoor central AC compressor/condenser unit were not spinning.  Oh dear!  Does it mean that we have to get a new one?  Hopefully not right now. We do not have a budget for home improvement right now.  As much as possible, we want to extend the service of this unit.

My hubby called for service to check on the unit and he said someone will come to our house tomorrow morning.  I hope they'll fix it soon.  But you know what?  We will consider whatever is best.

Lighted Curio Cabinet - Oak

Finally, I found a lighted curio cabinet.  I have been wanting to buy one ever since.  This was also sold from a garage sale and good thing I was the first one who negotiated the price to the seller.  Gladly she accepted my offer.  I checked this type of lighted curio cabinet online and they're quite costly.  I saw a similar corner lighted curio cabinet in oak priced at $299.00.  This one I bought for $60 and still in excellent condition.  The glass shelves are complete and intact.

Scared of it flying over board, the seller suggested to have it tied around to prevent from moving.  Thankfully there's a Lowe's store located close by that I stopped to buy a rope.  I humbly asked one of the staff who was currently gathering the shopping carts in the parking lot to help me tie the furniture in the truck.  I was so happy that he helped.

I was driving five miles less the speed limit on the superhighway.  That is to confident that the speed won't cause the furniture to tumble.

I went to visit a friend who has had her birthday few days ago.  I wasn't able to come over to her house on that day because I wasn't feeling well.  The coughing and sneezing were really bad. Gladly I didn't run a fever.  And thankfully, my husband and my daughter didn't get sick.  It's no fun when sick. 

Anyway, when I got to feel better, I went to see her and brought some pizza and a birthday greeting card.  It's better late than never, you know.  :) I was happy for her because the water leak in their living room was fixed in no time.  They contacted a plumbing service that really was reliable.  Now their next plan is re-flooring because of a few holes created on their floors from leak detection.

My friend mentioned that another reason she moved to a new house is to avoid too much stress about home maintenance and everything.  She found this new house she's renting now very nice and suited for her.  When she got a frozen pipe problem few months ago at her house, a plumber in Mississauga fixed the problem immediately.  On the other hand, we talked about the recent calamity done by the super typhoon in our province.  She told me her parents' house in her town got knocked down, too.  All utility services are not available as of the moment.  So tragic event.  We felt sad for a few moments during our talk.

Living without electricity is hard but living without water is one of the most difficult.  Plumbing services back home is badly needed there right now.  If we only have services like Mississauga plumbing, leaks and pipes problem will be resolved up front. We are very worried about our families back home.  All we can do right now is to do our very best to help and assist them with their needs.

I hope to see my friend soon.  Hopefully I can go to Canada or she can come over here to Texas.  Whichever works.

Mom's Special Day

We are at the in-laws house today for a visit.  It's my mother's-in-law birthday weekend and the family's getting together. Whenever there's a special occasion, my parents'-in-law sometimes host the event.  It is always nice to see family.  The kids enjoy playing together in the backyard.  The food is great.  Although the temperature drops, the house feels warm and comfortable. Mom's bouquets smell good around the house and they really pretty.  

I admire how my husband's parents take care of their home and lawn.  The flower gardens look colorful and grass is green and healthy.  I love being at my parents-in-law's place.  :)

Home Projects And Special Events

I tell you, this is a very busy year for us.  Here's why:

1.  Thanksgiving Day

      We are hosting this year's Thanksgiving Day.  That means my beauty will be busy planning for the event such as home decor, menu, dining theme, and cleaning the house.  Although my in-laws are here to help, I cannot help but think too much.

2.  Gardening

      My husband and I already started our flower and vegetable garden about four weeks ago.  The flower garden in front of our house still needs more attention.  The vegetable garden in the backyard looks nice and the plants are happy.  Gardening occupies our time too.

3.  Wedding

       My husband's niece is getting married this month.  I am one of the hostess for the luncheon for her and her bridesmaids.  The in-laws will be coming over in a few days to spend the evenings at our house.  So, our job is to do a good house cleaning again in a couple of days.

4.  Traveling and Vacation

     We are planning for a month-long vacation to the Philippines in December.  But we are not going to bring loads of packages because of the increasing fees and charges at the airport.  So, I am not gathering some gifts for everyone back home to send before Christmas. 

5.  Home Beautification Project

     As part of the home beautification project, yard work is one of the most difficult and time consuming.  The pathway in the front yard needs re-installation of paver stones.  The crack on the ground has made the pathway cement moved away from the patio floor.  So we need to get quote from systempavers for interlocking paver stones. 

Whew!  Lots of things to do.  Hopefully, we'll be able to finish at least the priorities. 

No Recommendation

We need to shop for cheap curtain rods for the bedrooms and the living room.  Hopefully little by little my home decorating will be half way to the finish line before we go on a month long vacation to the Philippines.  Haha!  We will be having a big spending this year because of the travel plans at the end of the year.  Whew!  Just thinking about the whole thing makes me dizzy.  Plus this big unexpected bill from the roofing company.  Someone told my husband a lower cost but when we received the invoice, it's not the same.  Oh well, they will not get a recommendation from us.  That's for sure.

I always admired the interior designs of hotels' rooms.  When my husband and I met for the first time, we went on a summer vacation.  The hotel resort was very serene and the rooms were accommodating.  You know, there is always a special feeling as soon as you step inside a classy hotel.  

The hotels' interior decor is undeniably elegant and the furnishings are well-made. One thing I notice closely checking in a hotel is the room lighting.  It is my fascination to look at good quality wall sconces.  Even though I do not have any skill in home decoration, my choice of lighting fixtures is between classy and modern.  In fact, I want this golden lighting fixture in my bathroom.  It seems like a calming ambiance when I turn this light on in my bathroom.  The idea came to me  when we went to Oklahoma last month for our wedding anniversary celebration.  The hotel's bathroom have this type of lighting.

Maintaining and decorating a home is an investment.  These require lots of money in order to fulfill the preference on how a home should look like.  We do not need to hire an interior designer just to make our house look and feel like a hotel's.  It is our responsibility as a woman to gather home decorating ideas.  And if we find something needed to be replaced or upgraded like the home lighting, a consultation with the husband and approval is very important.

The Leaks Have Gone Worse

My honey is very frustrated because there's a big leak mark in the ceiling in the guestroom.  He thought it was already fixed when he went up on the roof few days ago.  But when the storm came, the leak just got worse. From the ceiling, the leak marks ran down to the wall.  It looks really terrible.  

We need to get this leak problem fixed.  Something is not right on how the roof vents are done.  It needs a professional service and repair.  Like I said before, our house needs repainting, redecorating, and repairs.  Spring season is the best time to do all of these.  It is going to be a busy year for the house and for us too.

Spreading Christmas Cheer With Our Whole Neighborhood Through Outside Lights

I love nothing more around the holidays than decorating our home's exterior with lots and lots of Christmas lights. It's just so much fun to figure out all of the things that I can do with Christmas lights and I take it as a personal challenge to do something a little different with them every year. It's good for the people who drive by and see them, but it also makes it more fun and less of a chore for me.  

I get some of my ideas online from pictures that other people have taken from their home outdoor Christmas light displays. I was doing that a few nights ago when I ran across some info on Sears and decided to use them to remodel our kitchen after Christmas.

I did find a few ideas, like how to build your own words with lights. So I made a sign that said "Marry Christmas from the Wrights" that has been a really huge hit with all of the neighbors. That's something we'll have to bring back every year.

Putting Into Reality

All right, though it is a couple of weeks before the year ends, the plan to repaint and redecorate the house will be put into reality soon.  Actually, my honey has started repainting the dining ceiling for now.  After the holidays and birthday party of my daughter the busy new year starts.

It has been three years and our house needs to be retouched.  I am going to put curtains in the bedrooms.  Then I will be rearranging some of the furniture, if possible.  The master bathroom looks appealing to me but the guest room needs remodeling.  I know it will take time and surely money too, I think.  But I would like my guest bathroom to look like our master's bath. 

Stain-Free Carpet

Not almost done with one of the BIG chores today, carpet cleaning.  I finished vacuuming the bedroom except for my daughter's and the living room.  The areas are not available right now because she is playing here and there. 

One thing I liked about the carpet installed in our house is that, it does not stain easily.  I mean when something spilled on it, the substance is not absorbed by the carpet immediately.  So when the cleaning comes quickly, there is no stain.  Does it mean the carpet is stain-resistant?  Well, here is a word on "stain-resistant":

     Many carpets and sofas come pretreated with stain-resistant chemicals, which make liquids and potentially staining dyes pool on the surface of the fabric rather than sink right into it.  you can also apply your own stain barrier.  If you do decide to do the job yourself, opt for a stain repellent that prevents both oil- and water-based stains.

     Keep in mind that repellents work by creating a temporary barrier:  If a liquid hits teh surface, it will sit on top before sinking in.  So if you're standing there with a sponge, yes, they work.  but noting is truly stain-proof.  Another thing to consider:  Though treated materials are more durable, most of the chemicals in the treatments have never been tested for long-term health effects in humans, and research has shown that some of the chemicals used may have health risks.  If you're concerned about chemicals, the most natural option is to stick to washable casings and natural-fiber carpets that are not treated!

So we are cleaning our carpet twice a month  and, as needed, steam-clean it once every other year so the stain-resistant layer will not be removed.  And also we are very prompt in cleaning whenever a spill or a staining agent falls on the carpet.
